The Chiesa Maggiore della Verna was constructed over a period of more than a century, beginning in 1348 and finishing in 1509, with the support of Florence’s Wool Guild. The basilica’s impressive exterior features a portico and a 24-meter-tall belfry. Inside, the single-nave church houses numerous chapels, including the Renaissance-style Chapel of the Immaculate Conception, which contains relics that belonged to St. Francis of Assisi.

Renowned artist Andrea della Robbia contributed a series of exquisite glazed terracotta pieces to the church. The artwork, dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries, adds to the basilica’s rich historical and cultural significance.
